Turkey Time

We have all used a turkey bulletin board at one time or another. You've probably made the feathers and put different things on them to teach a concept or showcase student work. I just had to include these ideas because I love to make a different kind of turkey bulletin board each year.

Ideas:

This year I used the feathers of the turkey to teach about rhythms. I wrote the first and last name of a student on the feather and then created a rhythm to go with it. I made sure that the number of notes AND the number of syllables matched up. Students were interested in seeing what "their turkey rhythm" was and then creating several ways to use their name to make up more rhythms.

Use the feathers to write facts about composers or musicals and give the turkey a hat or tie or mustache or whatever to match the musical. For example, when the turkey feathers were detailing facts about "Oklahoma" the turkey wore a straw hat and boots. The "My Fair Lady" turkey wore a bow tie. There are tons of variations for this one if you're feeling creative.

Instead of putting the feathers on the turkey you could put them to the side of the turkey each with a different letter of the alphabet. Students could "dress" the turkey by moving the letters of the musical alphabet onto the turkey. You could use eighth notes, quarter notes, whole and half notes on some and have younger students "dress" the turkey by putting all the quarter note feathers on the turkey.
